Portrait (in Englisch)

The Swiss Geomorphological Society (SGS) was founded in 1946 by a Geomorphological Working Group at the University of Basel. Today’s 200 members come from a wide range of disciplines, from universities, administration and also from companies. The SGS is a member society of the Swiss Academy of Natural Science (SCNAT), of the Swiss Association of Geographers (ASG), and of the International Association of Geomorphologists (IAG).

Goals

The SGS invigorates geomorphology in science and practice, through the support of young scientists at universities, and by fostering relationships with associated scientific fields and the public services.

Activities

At annual meetings, in combination with a field trip, ongoing research activities of its members are presented and current issues of a particular geomorpho-logical interest are discussed. Considering the special interest of its members and in response to the present day problems and the science politics the SGS emphasizes:

  1. investigations related to the development and history of the landscape; and
  2. investigations of the nature and properties of the main land-forming processes.

Besides the intentions of pure science the research results are often used in an interdisciplinary context for:

Geomorphology has been studied since long ago in an attempt to evaluate nature for the protection and benefit of mankind. Therefore, geomorphology as a scientific discipline most closely related to nature itself and the SGS as a scientific society contribute to an important part to an ecological landuse practice.
